Sci Fi Focus > Encyclopedia > Star Wars > The Death Star The Death Star is a giant spherical spaceship (the size of a small moon) that appears under construction at the start of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and in operation Episode IV: A New Hope. It is a weapon of terror created by the Empire and is capable of completely destroying entire planets. At the end of Episode IV: A New Hope, the Death Star is destroyed by a Proton Torpedo fired from Luke Skywalker's X-Wing Fighter at the Battle of Yavin. In Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, a new version of the Death Star (The Death Star 2) is constructed, but this is also destroyed (along with the Emperor Palpatine who is still on board) at the Battle of Endor.
