Space Opera at the movies.
This is a series of films telling the epic story of the rise and fall of the Empire. Due to the success of the franchise their have been numerous spin-offs including books, comics, computer games, a role-playing game, action figures, toys, and more.
The first trilogy of films released were Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, which tell the story of the overthrow of the Empire.
(Note: At the time of its original release Episode IV: A New Hope was originally simply titled "Star Wars" - but was subsequently retitled when it became just one episode in a series of films.)
The remaining three films (Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith) are prequels that were released well over a decade later, and tell the story of how the Empire was established in the first place.

Luke Skywalker, proud Princess Leia, and headstrong Han Solo . . . merciless Darth Vader, wise Obi-Wan Kenobi, loyal droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, and the inscrutable Yoda . . .
