In the Star Wars films, Emperor Palpatine (mostly played by Ian McDiarmid), also known as Darth Sidious, is a Sith Lord and the principal villain.
In Episode I: The Phantom Menace, is a Senator who is elected Chancellor of the Old Republic. He maintains this position in Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and the first part of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. During all this time, he appears as a genial old-man and the other characters do not realize that he is serving his own nefarious ends.
In Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine convinces the Senate to support a "reorganization" of the Old Republic into the Empire (with himself as Emperor). The Jedi do eventually realize that Palpatine is a Sith: Palpatine is burned during a battle with Mace Windu (who is killed), and as a result, his physical appearance is transformed. Palpatine then orders the Clone Troopers to extermine the Jedi (Order 66).
Palpatine is remains Emperor until his eventual death in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (although his character does not appear in Episode IV: A New Hope).
