3 out of 5

In a nutshell:

Highly memorable creepy claustrophobic intelligent computer horror, based on one of Dean Koontz's early novels.

An intelligent computer (Proteus) decides it wants a child. It uses electronic equipment at its creator's home to imprison his wife (Julie Christie) and eventually to rape and impregnate her.

Best Bits:
  • Intriguing idea
  • Genuinely suspenseful
  • Tasteful and intelligent given the subject matter
  • Robert Vaughn's voicing of Proteus (uncredited)
  • The ending

Worst Bits:
  • Some plot holes: How does a motorized wheelchair sneak up and overcome an able-bodied young woman? How come the kitchen floor is wired to superheat? How come Christie's husband, a supposed genius, takes forever to figure out what Proteus is up to?
