In the fiction of Fred Saberhagen, Beserkers are *VON NEUMANN PROBES* created by an ancient and extinct race of aliens, and now on a mission to destroy all life.
The Beserker books cover events spread over a vast range of time and space, so while the human characters are different in each story, the Berserkers themselves are the constant running theme.
