In the fiction of Fred Saberhagen, Beserkers are *VON NEUMANN PROBES* created by an ancient and extinct race of aliens, and now on a mission to destroy all life.
The Beserker books cover events spread over a vast range of time and space, so while the human characters are different in each story, the Berserkers themselves are the constant running theme. This means a readers can jump into any book in the series, without reading its predecessors, and still be able to enjoy the story, as they are not be missing any crucial piece of background knowledge.
