Sci Fi Focus > Encyclopedia > Arthur C. Clarke
Sir Charles Arthur Clarke (1917-) is a British-born (he also holds Sri Lankan citizenship) science fiction author.
The film 2001: A Space Odyssey was loosely based on Clarke's short story, The Sentinel. Clarke rewrote the story as a novel while collaborating on a screenplay with Stanley Kubrik.
Clarke is often credited with the geostationary communication satellite, a concept that he first proposed in a 1945 paper. However, John R. Pierce at Bell Labs who has actually involved in the Echo and Telstar satellites arrived at the idea independently in 1954, although Pierce has stated the idea was "in the air" at the time.
Clarke has also presented two popular television programs: Athur C. Clarke's Mysterious World, and Arthur C. Clarke's World of Strange Powers.

From Narnia to Space Odyssey is the dialogue of letters between Arthur C. Clarke and C.S. Lewis in which they debate, discuss, and ponder the potential and potential dangers of the rise of technology. Their encounter sets the stage for much of what we face today: is technology the "beauty" that will lead to a more utopian society, or is it the "beast" that endangers our humanity and spirit? Clarke and Lewis began their correspondence in December 1943 when Clarke took Lewis to task for his remark about "little rocket societies bent on exporting the crimes of mankind to other planets." While they met only once (at a well-known pub in Oxford, with Lewis bringing along a good friend-the Oxford don, one J.R.R. Tolkein), their "encounters" lasted until 1954 when Clarke became involved in underwater exploration and left for the Great Barrier Reef. Their concern about the future of society, even from differing perspectives, is both provocative and illuminating, and bears close reading today when we are all confronted with the question whether mankind can control the explosion of technology or will become its slave. |

Click Here | Product Description: Author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, The City and the Stars, and the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Rendezvous with Rama, Arthur C. Clarke is the most celebrated science fiction author alive. He is—with H. G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, and Robert A. Heinlein—one of the writers who define science fiction in our time. Now Clarke has cooperated in the preparation of a massive, definitive edition of his collected shorter works. From early work like "Rescue Party" and "The Lion of Comarre," through classics like "The Star," "Earthlight," "The Nine Billion Names of God," and "The Sentinel" (kernel of the later novel, and movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey), all the way to later work like "A Meeting with Medusa" and "The Hammer of God," this immense volume encapsulates one of the great SF careers of all time.

Product Description: The Overlords appeared suddenly over every city--intellectually, technologically, and militarily superior to humankind. Benevolent, they made few demands: unify earth, eliminate poverty, and end war. With little rebellion, humankind agreed, and a golden age began.
But at what cost? With the advent of peace, man ceases to strive for creative greatness, and a malaise settles over the human race. To those who resist, it becomes evident that the Overlords have an agenda of their own. As civilization approaches the crossroads, will the Overlords spell the end for humankind . . . or the beginning? |
