Sci Fi Focus > Encyclopedia > Arthur C. Clarke
Sir Charles Arthur Clarke (1917-) is a British-born (he also holds Sri Lankan citizenship) science fiction author.
The film 2001: A Space Odyssey was loosely based on Clarke's short story, The Sentinel. Clarke rewrote the story as a novel while collaborating on a screenplay with Stanley Kubrik.
Clarke is often credited with the geostationary communication satellite, a concept that he first proposed in a 1945 paper. However, John R. Pierce at Bell Labs who has actually involved in the Echo and Telstar satellites arrived at the idea independently in 1954, although Pierce has stated the idea was "in the air" at the time.
Clarke has also presented two popular television programs: Athur C. Clarke's Mysterious World, and Arthur C. Clarke's World of Strange Powers.

Author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, The City and the Stars, and the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Rendezvous with Rama, Arthur C. Clarke is the most celebrated science fiction author alive. He is—with H. G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, and Robert A. Heinlein—one of the writers who define science fiction in our time. Now Clarke has cooperated in the preparation of a massive, definitive edition of his collected shorter works. From early work like "Rescue Party" and "The Lion of Comarre," through classics like "The Star," "Earthlight," "The Nine Billion Names of God," and "The Sentinel" (kernel of the later novel, and movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey), all the way to later work like "A Meeting with Medusa" and "The Hammer of God," this immense volume encapsulates one of the great SF careers of all time.

RosettaBooks Released: 2012-11-30 Kindle Edition (258 pages)
 | | Product Description: In the title story of this outstanding collection, a group of cosmonauts discovers the remains of an advanced civilization in a remote star system—destroyed when their sun went supernova. They find that the civilization was very similar to Earth’s—and that its people knew of their coming doom centuries before it occurred. What they find leads their chief astrophysicist—also a Jesuit priest—into a deep crisis of faith, sparked by a shocking revelation that has implications not just for history—but for religion. This collection of short stories demonstrates not only Clarke’s technological imagination—but also a deep poetic sensibility that led him to ponder the philosophical and moral implications of technological advances. These stories demonstrate the range of his vision as an author—based on both our scientific potential and the deeper aspects of the human condition. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Clarke is widely revered as one of the most influential science fiction writers of the 20th century, esteemed alongside Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein, a trio known informally as the “Big Three.” Before his death in 2008, he authored more than 100 novels, novellas, and short story collections and laid the groundwork for science fiction as we know it today. Combining scientific knowledge and visionary literary aptitude, Clarke’s work explored the implications of major scientific discoveries in astonishingly inventive and mystical settings. Clarke’s short stories and novels have won numerous Hugo and Nebula Awards, have been translated into more than 30 languages, and have sold millions of copies worldwide. Several of his books, including 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: Odyssey II, have been adapted into films that still stand as classic examples of the genre. Without a doubt, Arthur C. Clarke is one of the most important voices in contemporary science fiction literature. |
