In the Star Wars films, Anakin Skywalker (played by Jake Lloyd, Hayden Christensen and Sebastian Shaw) is one of the main characters. One of the ways of viewing the Star Wars story is as the tale of his life.
Anakin Skywalker is the husband of Amidala, and father of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.
In Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Anakin Skywalker is a child prodigy,discovered by Qui-Gon Jinn.
In Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker is a trainee Jedi serving as the apprentice (Padawan) to Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, he gradually turns towards evil (the Dark Side of the Force), and at the end of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith his transformation is complete. Anakin is also physically transformed, having been placed in a cybernetic suit after being horribly burned, and from then on, he is Darth Vader.
In Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, now in his Darth Vader guise, Anakin serves the Empire. However, at the end of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi he is redeemed (but dies), when he saves his son, Luke Skywalker, from the Emperor Palpatine.
After his death, Luke Skywalker sees the spirit of Anakin Skywalker restored to fully human form. In the original version of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, the spirit was an older man played by Sebastian Shaw. However, when the film was re-released in 2004, Hayden Christensen's image was used for this scene.
